When comparing lithium-ion batteries, voltage alone does not tell the whole story. Looking at the battery's voltage (V), amp-hour capacity (Ah), and watt-hour rating (Wh) provides a better understanding of how much energy a battery can store.
Understanding Battery Ratings
How Are Watt-Hours Calculated?
Watt-hours are calculated using: Voltage × Amp-Hours = Watt-Hours.
For the most accurate comparison, use the battery's official rated voltage and watt-hour specification when available, especially when a battery is marketed using a maximum-voltage rating.
40V EcoSharp Battery Capacities
The Snow Joe + Sun Joe 40V EcoSharp battery family was offered in multiple capacities. The model number is important because not every 40V battery has the same amp-hour rating.
| Battery Model | Battery Platform | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| iBAT40-LTE | 40V EcoSharp / iON | 2.0 Ah |
| iBAT40-LT | 40V EcoSharp / iON | 2.5 Ah |
| iBAT40 | 40V EcoSharp / iON | 4.0 Ah |
| iBAT40XR | 40V EcoSharp / iON | 5.0 Ah |
| iBAT40XRP | 40V EcoSharp / iON | 6.0 Ah |
What Does a Higher Ah Rating Mean?
When comparing compatible batteries within the same 40V platform, a battery with a higher amp-hour rating stores more usable capacity than a lower-Ah battery.
This can provide longer operating time, but actual runtime will depend on the tool being used, operating conditions, workload, battery condition, and how the tool is operated.
Example: The iBAT40-LTE, iBAT40-LT, and iBAT40 are all part of the 40V battery family, but their capacities are different: 2.0 Ah, 2.5 Ah, and 4.0 Ah, respectively.
This is why both the voltage and amp-hour rating should be checked when comparing batteries.
Does Higher Capacity Always Mean the Same Runtime?
No. Battery capacity is only one factor that affects runtime. Different tools place different demands on the battery, and heavier workloads can use available energy more quickly.
Always refer to the specifications for your specific Snow Joe or Sun Joe tool and battery when checking expected compatibility and performance.
Battery System Compatibility
Important: The legacy 40V EcoSharp / iON battery system is a different battery platform from current 24V IONMAX and 20V X20 EcoSharp products.
Do not select a replacement battery based on voltage or capacity alone. Confirm the battery model required by your specific tool.
