Snow Joe® Electric Snow Thrower Won’t Start or Stops During Use

If your Snow Joe® electric snow thrower isn’t turning on or stops while clearing snow, follow the steps below. Most issues can be resolved quickly and safely.

SJ618E, SJ619E, SJ623E, SJ623E-RM, SJ624E, SJ624E-ES, SJ625E, SJ626E, SJ627E

Important: Power Type

This model is corded electric and does not use a battery.
It must be plugged into a standard household outlet using an outdoor-rated extension cord.

Before You Begin

For your safety:

• Turn the unit OFF

• Unplug the extension cord

• Wait for all moving parts to stop completely

Issue: The Snow Thrower Will Not Turn On

Step 1: Check the Power Source

• Make sure the unit is plugged into a working 120V outlet

• If using a GFCI outlet, press the Reset button

• Try a different outlet if needed

Step 2: Check the Extension Cord

• Use an outdoor-rated extension cord only

• Recommended cord size:

  • Up to 50 ft: 14-gauge

  • 50–100 ft: 12-gauge

• Inspect the cord for cuts, fraying, or damage

  • If damaged, stop use and replace the cord

• Secure the extension cord using the on-board cord restraint hook

Step 3: Use the Safety Switch Correctly

This snow thrower will not start unless both controls are used properly:

1. Press and hold the safety lock button

2. While holding it, squeeze the ON/OFF switch

Releasing the safety lock button before squeezing the ON/OFF switch will prevent the unit from starting.

Issue: The Snow Thrower Starts, Then Shuts Off

• Check for a tripped GFCI outlet or circuit breaker

• Make sure the extension cord is fully connected and not overheating

• Avoid forcing the unit through deep or heavy snow — use steady, even pressure

Issue: The Auger Is Jammed

Snow or debris can block the auger and trigger an automatic safety reset.

How to Clear a Jam Safely

1. Turn the unit OFF and unplug it

2. Remove snow, ice, or debris from the auger area

   • Never use your hands

3. Wait at least 60 seconds

4. Plug the unit back in and restart

The snow thrower will resume normal operation once the obstruction is cleared.

• Always direct snow away from people, vehicles, and windows

• Keep children and pets away from the work area

• Do not operate the unit in wet conditions or standing water

• Store the snow thrower indoors in a dry location when not in use
