Before You Start
Make sure your generator is fully assembled, its engine oil has been added to the specified level, and the propane cylinder and regulator are properly connected and checked for leaks as described in the operator's manual.
Safety first: Operate the generator outdoors only, away from doors, windows, vents and occupied buildings. Exhaust contains deadly carbon monoxide. Place the unit on a level surface, keep it away from combustible materials, and never start it with appliances plugged into the outlets. If you smell propane or suspect a leak, do not start the generator; shut off the cylinder valve and follow the manual's leak-safety instructions.
Start Your Power Joe — Electric Start
-
Check the Engine Oil
With the engine off and the generator on a level surface, check the engine lubricant level before each use. Add the specified oil if needed, following the operator's manual.
-
Disconnect All Electrical Loads
Make sure nothing is plugged into the generator outlets before starting the engine.
-
Insert the Starting Battery
Open the storage compartment and insert the charged 24V battery into the battery compartment (Fig. 20).
-
Open the Propane Cylinder Valve
Confirm that the propane cylinder and regulator have been properly installed and leak-tested. Then fully open the cylinder valve (Fig. 21).
-
Turn the Engine Switch On
Set the engine switch to ON (Fig. 22).
-
Set the Choke to START
Move the choke lever all the way LEFT to the START position (Fig. 23).
-
Start the Engine
Press the engine switch to the START position (Fig. 24). If the battery needs charging, use the recoil-start method below instead.
-
Move the Choke to RUN
Let the engine run for 15–30 seconds, then move the choke lever all the way RIGHT to RUN (Fig. 25).
Alternative: Recoil Start
If you prefer manual starting or the electric-start battery is low, use the recoil starter.
-
Complete the Starting Checks
Follow steps 1–6 above: check oil, unplug all loads, insert the battery, open the tested propane supply, set the engine switch to ON, and move the choke to START.
-
Pull the Recoil Starter
Grasp the recoil starter grip and pull until the engine starts (Fig. 26). Do not let the grip snap back; return it gently.
-
Move the Choke to RUN
After the engine runs for 15–30 seconds, move the choke all the way RIGHT to RUN.
After the Engine Starts
Let the generator warm up with no load for 2–3 minutes. Then plug in and turn on your largest intended load first. Allow the generator to stabilize before adding other devices, one at a time. Never exceed the generator's rated running or starting capacity.
Important: Do not connect the generator directly to home wiring. Any approved building connection requires appropriate equipment installed by a qualified electrician.
