Overload protection helps protect your Sun Joe electric lawn dethatcher + scarifier when the cutting device encounters conditions that place too much demand on the unit.
If the circuit breaker is activated, stop using the machine and correct the cause before restarting it.
Article scope: This guidance is for corded electric Sun Joe lawn dethatcher + scarifier models. Cordless models use a different power system and should be checked using their model-specific operator's manual.
What Can Activate Overload Protection?
The operator's manuals identify three conditions that can activate overload protection:
What Should I Do If Overload Protection Activates?
-
Switch the Unit Off
Stop the dethatcher + scarifier and release the operating controls.
-
Disconnect the Power Supply
Unplug the unit from the power supply before inspecting or clearing the cutting area.
-
Allow the Unit to Cool
Let the dethatcher + scarifier cool down before continuing.
-
Find + Remove the Cause
Check for accumulated scarified material or another condition that may be creating excessive resistance around the cutting device.
-
Restart Only After the Cause Is Corrected
Once the unit has cooled and the cause of the overload has been eliminated, reconnect it to power and resume operation.
Safety first: Always disconnect the unit from the power supply before inspecting the cutting device or removing accumulated material. Wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop before beginning any inspection.
How Can I Help Prevent Overloading?
- Select a cutting or scarifying depth appropriate for the actual grass height.
- Move the machine forward at an appropriate speed. Do not move too quickly, which can contribute to blockage and overloading.
- Keep the air vents unobstructed and clean. Blocked air vents can lead to overheating and product damage.
- Make sure the lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, and other objects that could damage the machine or motor.
- Do not operate the machine on a wet lawn. Wet material can stick underneath the machine and interfere with proper discharge.
Current Sun Joe electric dethatcher + scarifier models use adjustable depth settings. Choose the setting appropriate for your lawn and the dethatching or scarifying task rather than forcing the cutting device too deeply into the turf.
What If the Overload Protection Keeps Activating?
If the circuit breaker repeatedly activates after the material has been cleared, the unit has cooled, and the operating depth and speed have been adjusted, stop using the machine.
Do not open the motor housing or attempt internal electrical repairs.
