If the motor on your Sun Joe CJ603E will not run, check the power connection, hopper safety system, direction control, and overload protection in the order below. Do not open the machine or attempt an internal electrical repair.
Model Covered
| Model | Product | Power Type |
|---|---|---|
| CJ603E | Sun Joe Silent Electric Wood Chipper + Shredder | 120V AC, 15 amp, corded electric |
This procedure is specific to CJ603E. Other chipper and shredder models may use different switches, reset procedures, branch capacities, or extension-cord requirements.
Before Troubleshooting
- Wear eye and hearing protection, protective gloves, safety footwear, and close-fitting clothing.
- Keep the machine dry and use a GFCI-protected outlet.
- Confirm that the feeding funnel is empty before attempting to start the motor.
- Keep people and pets away from the feeding and discharge areas.
Motor Will Not Run
Inspect the Unit and Cords
Keep the chipper unplugged. Check the appliance cord, plug, extension cord, receptacle, switches, feeding funnel, hopper, locking hardware, and housing for damage, moisture, looseness, scorching, or exposed wiring. Do not continue if damage is found.
Confirm the Hopper Is Closed and Secured
Make sure the hopper and feeding funnel are correctly installed and the locking knob is secured. The CJ603E safety system is designed to stop the motor when the hopper is opened.
Verify the Outlet
Test the outlet with another suitable device or use a known working outlet. Reset the GFCI or household circuit breaker only if it is safe and appropriate to do so. Do not bypass electrical protection.
Check the Extension Cord
Use an outdoor-rated, UL-, CSA-, or ETL-listed extension cord. The CJ603E requires 14 AWG for up to 25 ft (7.6 m) or 12 AWG for over 25 ft through 50 ft (7.6-15 m). Do not use a cord longer than 50 ft. Replace a cut, cracked, loose, scorched, or otherwise damaged cord.
Secure the Cord Connection
Connect the appliance cord and extension cord using the cord-retention method shown in the operator's manual, then plug the extension cord into the working outlet.
Select Forward
Press the forward end of the forward/reverse switch. The motor will not start correctly if the direction switch remains in the middle position.
Press the ON Button
With the feeding funnel empty and everyone clear of the unit, press the ON button. If the motor starts, allow it to reach normal speed before feeding approved material.
Check for an Overload
If the motor stopped while shredding or does not restart, press OFF, return the direction switch to the middle position, unplug the unit, and wait at least one minute. The overload protector may have cut power because the machine was clogged or overloaded.
Clear an Overload or Jam
Wait at Least One Minute
Keep the unit unplugged and allow the motor and overload protector to reset. Do not press the reset button repeatedly.
Check Accessible Openings
After all movement has stopped, inspect the feeding funnel and ejection slot for accessible blocked material. Never reach into the hopper or under the machine. Do not touch the cutting mechanism.
Reconnect and Press Reset
Confirm the hopper is secured, the feeding funnel is empty, and everyone is clear. Reconnect power and press the reset button once.
Run in Reverse
Press the reverse end of the forward/reverse switch, then press the ON button. Reverse mode is intended to push jammed branches back from the feeding funnel. Stand clear and do not pull material from a moving machine.
Switch Off Again
Once the material has backed out, press OFF, return the direction switch to the middle position, unplug the unit, and wait for all movement to stop.
Restart in Forward
After the jam is fully cleared, reconnect the unit, select forward, and press ON. Feed only suitable material and do not exceed the maximum branch diameter of 1.73 inches (4.4 cm).
Reduce the Load
Feed material gradually and allow chopped material to fall freely from the ejection slot. Alternate wilted or damp garden waste with dry branches and do not force material into the machine.
If the Motor Still Does Not Run
- Confirm the outlet still has power and the GFCI or circuit breaker has not opened again.
- Confirm the extension cord is the correct gauge, is no longer than 50 ft, and is fully connected.
- Confirm the hopper is closed and secured, the direction switch is set to forward, and the ON button is being pressed.
- Allow additional cooling time if the motor or cord became hot.
- Do not repeat the reset-and-reverse procedure if the machine immediately trips again.
Safety Stop Conditions
- The appliance cord, plug, extension cord, outlet, switch, or housing is cut, cracked, loose, wet, scorched, melted, or otherwise damaged
- The GFCI, circuit breaker, or overload protector trips repeatedly
- The unit produces smoke, sparks, a burning odor, electrical buzzing, grinding, unusual vibration, or excessive heat
- The hopper, feeding funnel, safety switch, locking knob, guard, paddle, or another safety component is damaged, loose, or missing
- A jam cannot be cleared using the approved reset and reverse procedure
- The supply cord, motor, switch, wiring, blade system, or another internal component requires repair
Escalation Path
Contact Shop Joe Customer Support when:
- The motor remains off after the power, cord, hopper, controls, cool-down, and overload-reset checks.
- The overload protector or household electrical protection opens again after one controlled retest.
- The motor runs only in one direction or the forward/reverse switch does not respond normally.
- A jam remains inside the cutting mechanism or cannot be cleared without reaching into the machine.
- Any electrical or safety-related part is damaged or an internal repair is needed.
Have the model number, serial number, date code, purchase details, extension-cord length and gauge, material being chipped, and a description of what happened before the motor stopped ready. Contact Shop Joe Customer Support or call 1-866-225-9723.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait after the overload protector stops the motor?
Wait at least one minute before pressing the reset button and attempting the approved reverse-mode jam-clearing procedure.
Can I use an extension cord longer than 50 feet?
No. The CJ603E manual states not to use an extension cord longer than 50 ft (15 m). Use 14 AWG up to 25 ft or 12 AWG over 25 ft through 50 ft.
Why will the unit not start when the direction switch is centered?
The middle position is the neutral or off position. Select the forward end of the forward/reverse switch before pressing ON for normal shredding.
Can I reach into the hopper to remove a jam?
No. Never place your hands into the hopper or beneath the machine. Use the approved reverse procedure and contact support if the obstruction cannot be cleared safely.
Can I bypass the safety switch or overload protector?
No. Never bypass, modify, or disable a safety device. Keep the unit unplugged and contact support if a safety component is not functioning correctly.
