What to Do
-
Use the Correct Start Sequence
Place the mower on a level area of short grass or a previously mowed area. Hold the handle with both hands and tilt it downward slightly to raise the front of the mower. Press and hold the safety lock button, then pull the switch lever toward the handle. When the motor starts, release the safety lock button and gently lower the mower.
-
Check the Outlet and Circuit
Confirm the mower is connected to a working outlet. Check the circuit breaker or fuse and use a GFCI-protected outlet. Do not use the mower if the appliance cord, plug, or extension cord is damaged.
-
Confirm the Extension Cord
Use a UL-, CSA-, or ETL-rated outdoor extension cord of the proper length and wire gauge:
- Up to 50 ft: 14 AWG
- More than 50 ft and up to 100 ft: 12 AWG
- Do not use an extension cord longer than 100 ft
Secure the cord in the extension-cord restraint before connecting it to the outlet.
-
Allow the Motor to Cool
If the mower stopped during use or was working in heavy grass, unplug it and allow the motor to cool. The thermal overload protection can shut the motor off under heavy load and permits operation again after a short cooling period.
-
Check for a Cutting Obstruction
With the mower unplugged and the blade fully stopped, inspect the discharge channel and mower housing for packed grass or debris. Wear protective gloves and follow the manual when checking the blade area. Do not restart the mower if the blade is damaged or cannot move freely.
-
Adjust for the Grass Conditions
Set an appropriate cutting height and start on short grass or an area that has already been mowed. Slightly raising the front wheels during startup reduces the load on the motor; lower the mower gently after it reaches operating speed.
If the Mower Still Does Not Start
Stop troubleshooting if the cord or plug is damaged, the circuit trips repeatedly, the blade is damaged or obstructed, or the motor makes an unusual sound. Do not open the motor housing or bypass the safety lock.
