Low, weak, or pulsating pressure is commonly caused by restricted inlet water, air in the hose, a clogged filter or nozzle, or use of a low-pressure detergent setting. Follow the checks below in order.
Models Covered and Power Type
Models Covered
Sun Joe corded electric pressure washers that connect to a household garden hose and use a spray gun with quick-connect nozzles or an adjustable spray wand, including the SPX3000 family.
Power Type
Corded electric pressure washers supplied by a faucet or garden-hose connection.
For portable tank-fed or cordless spray washers, follow the water-source and pressure instructions in the manual for that exact model. View the current Shop Joe pressure-washer collection.
Troubleshooting Steps
-
Open the Water Supply Fully
Connect the pressure washer to a clean household water supply and open the faucet completely. An inadequate inlet-water supply can prevent the pump from reaching normal working pressure.
-
Inspect the Garden Hose
Use a garden hose with a minimum 1/2-inch diameter. Avoid a long, thin hose. Straighten all kinks and check the hose for leaks, blockages, or restricted flow.
-
Check the Inlet Connections and Filter
Make sure the garden hose adapter and all hose connections are secure and airtight. Remove and rinse the water-inlet filter with warm water to clear debris before reinstalling it.
-
Purge Air from the Water System
With the pressure washer OFF, turn the water supply on completely. Release the trigger safety lock, then squeeze the trigger for a few seconds until the water flow is steady. This releases trapped air and residual pressure. Start the pressure washer and continue holding the trigger until regular working pressure resumes.
-
Clean the Spray Nozzle
Turn the unit OFF, unplug it, shut off the water, and release pressure. Remove the nozzle or wand as directed in the model manual. Use the supplied needle clean-out tool to clear the nozzle opening, then rinse away loosened debris before reinstalling it.
-
Select a High-Pressure Spray Setting
If the model uses quick-connect tips, do not test pressure with the black soap nozzle because it is designed for low-pressure detergent application. Install an appropriate cleaning nozzle for the surface. If the model has an adjustable wand, move it out of the low-pressure detergent setting according to its manual.
-
Test the Pressure Washer
Reconnect the required components, turn the water supply fully on, and test the unit while holding the trigger. If pressure fluctuates, recheck the inlet hose, connections, filter, and nozzle for a remaining restriction or air leak.
If High Pressure Does Not Return
Stop troubleshooting if water leaks from the pump or bottom of the unit, a connection cannot be secured, or the pressure continues to fluctuate after all external checks are complete. Do not open the pump or attempt an internal repair.
