If detergent is not dispensing from your Sun Joe pressure washer, first identify whether the unit uses an onboard detergent tank or a detachable foam cannon or spray bottle. The correct nozzle, connection, and cleaning procedure depend on that system.
Models Covered
This guide covers the corded pressure washers currently listed in the Shop Joe Pressure Washers collection. Check the product label and exact operator's manual before selecting a procedure.

The bundle SKU and unit model number may be different.
Portable Battery-Powered Sprayers and Washers
WA24C-LTE, 24V-PSW25, and X20-PSC-5A-BLK use model-specific tanks, pumps, and controls. Do not apply the corded SPX detergent-injection steps unless the exact manual identifies the same system.
Not a pressure washer: SPX-SRL9 is a standalone sky-lance accessory and is not included in detergent-system troubleshooting.
Before Troubleshooting
- Wear eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves appropriate for the detergent.
- Never point the spray at people, pets, live electrical equipment, or the pressure washer.
- Use only detergent specifically designed for pressure washers.
- Do not use household detergent, bleach, chlorine products, acids, alkaline solutions, solvents, flammable liquids, or industrial-grade chemicals.
- Do not mix products unless the detergent manufacturer specifically directs you to do so.
Identify the Detergent System
Onboard Tank System
The tank is mounted on the pressure washer and sends detergent through a suction tube. These systems normally require the model's black soap nozzle because detergent is drawn only at low pressure. Some models have two tanks and a dial that selects the active tank.
Foam Cannon or Spray Bottle System
The detergent bottle attaches to the trigger gun, transfer adapter, lance, or quick-connect fitting specified for that model. The bottle produces the detergent spray itself; do not substitute an unrelated black nozzle or third-party attachment.
Detergent Is Not Dispensing
-
Confirm the Correct Attachment
Compare the installed tank, bottle, suction tube, adapter, nozzle, and connection point with the parts shown for the exact model. Use only the approved attachment and fittings.
-
Check the Detergent Level
Make sure the tank or bottle contains enough pressure-washer detergent for the suction tube to remain submerged. Do not operate the detergent system empty.
-
Prepare the Detergent Correctly
Read the detergent label. Mix or dilute only as directed by the detergent manufacturer. A concentrate that requires dilution may be too thick to draw correctly when used full strength.
-
Inspect the Suction Tube and Cap
With the unit depressurized and disconnected from power, confirm the tube is attached at both ends, reaches the detergent, and is not kinked, pinched, cracked, hardened, or blocked. Make sure the cap and bottle are assembled correctly.
-
Check the Detergent Control
For an onboard tank, move the detergent dial away from the center or OFF position and select the filled tank when applicable. For a foam cannon, open the foam-volume control to a moderate setting. Do not adjust a foam cannon while spraying.
-
Use the Correct Low-Pressure Setup
For SPX3000, SPX3000-MAX, SPX3501, and SPX4800, install the exact model's black soap nozzle. Other colored high-pressure tips will not draw detergent. For foam-cannon or spray-bottle models, attach the bottle assembly exactly as shown in the manual instead of using an unrelated nozzle.
-
Confirm Normal Water Flow
Make sure the garden hose is fully open, the inlet filter is clean, hoses are not kinked, and the pressure washer has been purged of trapped air. The detergent system cannot work correctly without steady water flow.
-
Perform One Controlled Test
Reconnect water and power, release the safety lock, and test on a small inconspicuous area. Keep the trigger held long enough for detergent to travel through the tube or attachment. Stop if the pump loses water flow, leaks, or sounds abnormal.
Clean a Detergent Blockage
-
Shut Down and Depressurize
Turn off the unit, disconnect power, shut off the water, squeeze the trigger to release pressure, and engage the safety lock.
-
Empty the Detergent
Remove the tank, bottle, cap, or suction tube only as allowed for the exact model. Store or dispose of unused detergent according to its label and local requirements. Do not pour it into the water supply or onto the ground.
-
Rinse Removable Parts
Rinse the approved bottle, cap, and suction tube with clean water. Remove visible residue without enlarging an opening or using wire, drill bits, or sharp improvised tools.
-
Flush With Clean Water
For onboard injection systems, place the suction tube in clean fresh water and operate at low pressure for approximately one minute when directed by the exact manual. For a foam cannon, fill or rinse it with clean water and flush it according to its model instructions.
-
Clean the Correct Nozzle
If the black soap nozzle or spray nozzle is visibly obstructed, use only the supplied needle clean-out tool and the nozzle-cleaning procedure for the exact model. Do not insert the needle into a suction tube, valve, foam control, or injector.
-
Retest With Approved Detergent
Reassemble the system, add correctly prepared pressure-washer detergent, select the correct low-pressure setting, and perform one controlled test.
Safety Stop Conditions
- Detergent contacts electrical parts, leaks inside the machine, or sprays from a cracked hose, tank, bottle, cap, or fitting
- The detergent is bleach, acidic, alkaline, flammable, solvent-based, industrial grade, or not intended for pressure washers
- The pump runs without a steady water supply, repeatedly loses pressure, overheats, or makes an unusual noise
- The trigger gun, wand, nozzle, injector, tank, suction tube, foam cannon, hose, or fitting is damaged or cannot be secured
- A blockage requires disassembly of the pump, injector, valve, trigger gun, or another internal component
- Detergent still does not dispense after one complete model-appropriate test and clean-water flush
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Sun Joe pressure washer use the black soap nozzle?
No. The black soap nozzle is required for applicable onboard detergent-injection models. Foam-cannon and spray-bottle models use their approved bottle assembly instead. Check the exact model manual.
Can I use the SPX3000-TPS black nozzle on every pressure washer?
No. Use only a nozzle or attachment confirmed as compatible with the exact pressure-washer model. A nozzle designed for one quick-connect system is not automatically approved for every unit.
Can I use household dish soap or bleach?
No. Use detergent specifically designed for pressure washers. Do not use household detergent, bleach, chlorine products, acids, alkaline solutions, solvents, flammable liquids, or industrial-grade chemicals.
Should detergent be diluted?
Follow the instructions on the detergent container. Some concentrates require mixing before use, while ready-to-use formulas may not. Do not guess at the ratio.
Can I use vinegar to clear the detergent tube?
Do not use vinegar unless the exact model manual specifically directs it. Use clean fresh water for the routine flushing procedures described in the manuals reviewed for this guide.
Why does water spray normally but detergent does not?
The unit may be using a high-pressure nozzle, the detergent dial may be off, the foam control may be closed, the suction tube may not be submerged or connected, the mixture may be too thick, or the detergent path may be blocked.
