Not covered: Corded snow blowers, cordless snow shovels, covers, clean-out tools, and other standalone accessories have different requirements. If your model is not listed, use the storage section in its exact manual.
Before You Begin
- Choose a dry indoor storage area that can be locked and kept out of children’s reach.
- Keep the correct operator’s manual available for your model.
- Allow batteries to cool to room temperature before charging or storing them.
- Do not begin cleaning or inspection until the machine is off, all moving parts have stopped, and every battery is removed.
Store the Snow Blower
-
Run the Auger or Impeller Briefly
After the final snow-clearing pass, keep the machine outdoors and run it for a few minutes to help prevent the auger, collector, or impeller from freezing. Stop the machine and wait for every moving part to come to a complete stop.
-
Power Down and Remove Every Battery
Turn the machine off, remove the safety key when the model uses one, and remove all battery packs. A two-battery model requires both packs removed; the 96V-Q4-SB24 requires all four.
-
Remove Snow and Ice Safely
Use the clean-out tool or a suitable brush to remove remaining snow. Wipe the housing, handles, chute, and battery compartments dry. On models with a chute crank or deflector control, move it through its normal range to release trapped snow.
-
Inspect the Machine
Check for loose fasteners, worn or damaged belts, damaged scraper bars, cracked housings, damaged battery compartments, loose handles, unreadable labels, and other visible damage. Do not operate or store the blower as ready for use if a safety-related defect is found.
-
Prepare for Transport if Needed
Secure the machine so it cannot tip, roll, or shift. Transport batteries separately from the blower, protected from moisture, impact, metal objects, and extreme temperatures.
-
Store the Unit Indoors
Place the clean, dry snow blower in a locked, dry indoor location away from children, moisture, corrosive chemicals, and unauthorized use. Follow the manual before folding or changing the handle position.
-
Preserve Labels and Records
Keep safety and instruction labels readable. Record the model and serial numbers and retain the operator’s manual for future maintenance or support.
Store 24V IONMAX Batteries and Chargers
Use these steps for 24V-X2 models and for all four 24V packs used by the 96V-Q4-SB24.
-
Disconnect the Charger
Remove every battery from the machine and charger, then unplug the charger. Do not leave packs installed or connected during off-season storage.
-
Inspect and Dry the Components
Do not store a battery or charger that is wet, cracked, swollen, leaking, unusually hot, or otherwise damaged. Never use oil or solvents on the battery casing.
-
Choose a Dry, Temperature-Controlled Location
Store the packs and charger at room temperature, away from moisture, direct sunlight, heat sources, vehicles, and metal buildings that become hot. Prolonged storage above 120°F (49°C) can permanently reduce battery capacity.
-
Maintain the Off-Season Charge
For the covered 24V IONMAX examples, recharge every six months to approximately 50% capacity, shown as two charge-indicator lights. Check each pack individually and use only its compatible charger.
-
Protect the Terminals
Keep terminals clean and away from keys, coins, fasteners, tools, or other metal objects that could cause a short circuit.
Store 100V iONPRO Batteries and Chargers
-
Remove and Unplug
Remove the 100V battery from the blower and charger, then unplug the charger.
-
Store Cool and Dry
Keep the battery and charger in a cool, dry location. The iON100V example recommends an ideal temperature near 59°F (15°C), away from direct sunlight and locations above 104°F (40°C).
-
Maintain at Least 40% Charge
Store the battery at a charge level of at least 40%. Follow the exact 100V battery and charger manual for recharge intervals and indicator behavior rather than applying the 24V two-light rule.
-
Prevent Freezing and Deep Discharge
Do not store the battery where it can freeze or remain deeply discharged. Recharge it only at room temperature and never use a damaged pack.
Safety Stop Conditions
- Swollen, cracked, punctured, leaking, or badly dented
- Wet inside the casing or terminals
- Producing smoke, odor, hissing, unusual heat, or discoloration
- Damaged by fire, impact, crushing, or an electrical short
Move away from smoke or fire, avoid breathing fumes, and contact emergency services when there is an active fire or immediate danger. Do not touch a hot or smoking battery.
Preseason Readiness Check
-
Inspect Before Installation
Check the blower, battery compartments, packs, chargers, cables, fasteners, controls, chute, scraper, auger or impeller, and safety labels for damage.
-
Charge at Room Temperature
Use only the charger specified for the battery platform. Allow cold packs to reach room temperature before charging.
-
Install the Complete Battery Set
Install the number and type of batteries required by the exact model. For multi-battery machines, use compatible packs with similar charge levels as directed by the manual.
-
Test in a Clear Outdoor Area
Confirm the controls, lights, auger or impeller, chute controls, and drive system operate normally before the first snowfall. Keep people, pets, and loose objects away.
Quick Troubleshooting Checks
The Snow Blower Will Not Start After Storage
- Confirm every required battery is correctly installed and charged.
- Check that the safety key is installed when the model uses one.
- Allow a cold battery to reach room temperature.
- Inspect the battery contacts and compartments for moisture, corrosion, or damage.
- Use the exact starting sequence in the model’s operator’s manual.
The Auger or Impeller Will Not Turn
- Turn the machine off, remove every battery, and wait for all movement to stop.
- Use the clean-out tool to check for packed snow, ice, or a foreign object.
- Allow frozen components to thaw in a dry location.
- Do not reach into the auger housing or chute and do not force the mechanism by hand.
Runtime Is Shorter Than Expected
- Fully charge each required battery with its compatible charger.
- Allow very cold packs to warm to room temperature before charging.
- For multi-battery models, confirm the packs are compatible and similarly charged.
- Remember that heavy, wet snow and high travel or auger speeds use more energy.
- If a pack was stored hot, deeply discharged, or without periodic charging, its capacity may have declined.
The Charger Does Not Recognize a Battery
- Confirm the charger is compatible with the battery platform and connected to a working outlet.
- Allow the pack to reach room temperature.
- Check for moisture, dirt, damage, or corrosion at the contacts.
- Do not continue charging a pack that becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells, or produces smoke.
Escalation Path
Contact Shop Joe support when:
- The unit has worn, loose, damaged, or missing safety-related parts.
