Before storing your Sun Joe corded electric tiller + cultivator for the season, disconnect it from power, clean and inspect the machine, and store it in a dry, frost-free location.
Article scope: This guide is for corded electric Sun Joe tillers + cultivators. The Shop Joe collection also includes cordless battery-powered models, which have different storage requirements.
Before Cleaning or Storing
Disconnect the tiller + cultivator from the power supply and wait for all moving parts, including the tines, to come to a complete stop before cleaning, inspecting, maintaining, or storing the machine.
How to Prepare Your Electric Tiller for Storage
-
Inspect the Tiller + Cultivator
Examine the machine thoroughly for worn, loose, or damaged parts.
Do not store or operate the unit with damaged components that could affect safe operation.
-
Inspect the Extension Cord
Check the extension cord thoroughly for excessive wear or damage.
If the extension cord is worn or damaged, replace it immediately.
-
Disconnect the Extension Cord
Remove the extension cord from the tiller + cultivator before storing the machine.
-
Allow the Motor to Cool
If the tiller + cultivator was recently used, allow the motor to cool completely before placing it into storage.
-
Clean the Tiller + Tines
Remove accumulated soil, dirt, and debris from the machine and around the tines before storage.
Keep the tines clean so they can rotate freely and do not store the machine with heavy debris buildup around the cutting area.
-
Choose a Dry, Frost-Free Storage Location
Store the tiller + cultivator and its accessories in a dark, dry, frost-free, and well-ventilated place.
-
Keep It Away from Children
Store the machine in a location that is inaccessible to children.
-
Keep the Storage Area within the Recommended Temperature
For models whose manuals specify a storage range, the recommended storage temperature is between 50°F (10°C) and 86°F (30°C).
-
Protect the Tiller from Dust
Where specified in the model's manual, use the original packaging or cover the product with a suitable cloth or enclosure to help protect it from dust.
Winter Storage
Because these models are corded electric tillers + cultivators, there is no gasoline, engine oil, or fuel system to prepare for winter storage.
Seasonal storage focuses on keeping the machine unplugged, clean, dry, frost-free, inspected, and protected from dust and damage.
What Should I Check Around the Tines?
Before storage, make sure soil and debris have not accumulated around the tine area. The machine should be clean and the tines should be able to rotate freely.
Do not clean or inspect the tine area while the machine is connected to power.
Can I Fold the Tiller for Storage?
This depends on your model. Some electric tillers, such as the TJ600E, include a collapsible handle for more compact storage.
On the TJ600E, loosen the handle knobs and fold the fork grips down. Make sure the power cable is not pinched while folding the handle.
Do not assume every electric tiller folds the same way. Always follow the storage instructions in the operator's manual for your exact model.
What If I Find a Damaged Part?
Use only authorized Snow Joe + Sun Joe replacement parts and accessories intended for your specific tiller + cultivator.
The operator's manuals warn that using replacement parts or accessories not intended for the machine can result in injury or mechanical damage.
