Proper storage prevents trapped water, detergent residue, damaged hoses, and freeze-related pump damage. Use this guide after the final cleaning session of the season or whenever the pressure washer will be stored for an extended period.
Models Covered + Power Types
This guide covers Sun Joe pressure washers and pressure sprayers listed in the Shop Joe pressure-washer collection. Always follow the manual for your complete model number if its procedure differs.
Corded Electric
SPX Series and other Sun Joe electric pressure washers that connect to an AC outlet.
Cordless
Battery-powered Sun Joe pressure washers and pressure sprayers with removable battery packs.
Freeze Warning
Store the pressure washer in a location that remains above 32°F (0°C). Water left inside the pump, hoses, or detergent system can freeze and cause permanent damage. Freeze damage is not covered by the warranty.
Storage + Winterization Steps
Shut down the pressure washer
Turn the unit off and turn off the water supply. For a corded model, unplug the power cord. For a cordless model, remove the battery pack. Squeeze the trigger to release the remaining water pressure.
Disconnect the water and pressure hoses
Disconnect the garden hose, siphon hose, high-pressure hose, trigger gun, and other water connections supplied with your model. Drain each hose completely and avoid bends or kinks during storage.
Empty the detergent system
Empty and rinse the detergent tank, detergent bottle, or foam cannon. Do not store diluted detergent in the unit. Flush detergent residue with clean water according to the model manual.
Remove water from the pump
Drain as much water as possible from the pump and connections. For corded SPX models whose manual includes this procedure, disconnect the water connections, run the unit for only a few seconds until the remaining water exits, and switch it off immediately. Do not use this step on another model unless its manual instructs you to do so.
Clean the filter and nozzle
Remove and rinse the water-inlet filter or pre-filter with clean water. If the manual supplies a needle clean-out tool, use it as directed to clear the nozzle, then rinse the nozzle and spray wand.
Protect the pump for winter storage
If the model manual permits it, run a non-corrosive, non-toxic antifreeze, pump saver, or pump protector through the pump before winter storage. Follow the product and pressure-washer instructions; do not substitute an unapproved liquid.
Store the unit and accessories indoors
Store the pressure washer upright in a dry, covered, frost-free room. Keep hoses unkinked and protect the spray gun, wand, nozzles, adapters, filters, and detergent accessories from dirt and damage. Do not store the unit near a furnace or intense heat that may dry out pump seals.
Store removable batteries separately
For cordless models, keep the battery removed from the tool and store the battery and charger indoors in a dry location. Follow the temperature, charge-level, and off-season instructions in the exact battery and product manuals.
