Proper storage helps protect your Sun Joe battery-operated lawn mower between uses and during the off-season.
Storage instructions differ depending on whether your mower uses removable battery packs or an integrated battery, so follow the section that matches your model.
Which Type of Battery Does My Mower Have?
Removable Battery Pack
These models use one or more battery packs that can be removed from the mower for charging and storage.
Examples include IONMAX models such as the 24V-X2-17LM and MJ24C-14 / MJ24C-14-XR.
Integrated Battery
On these models, the rechargeable battery is built into the mower and is not removed during normal use or storage.
The MJ401C is an example of a mower with an integrated rechargeable battery.
If you are unsure which battery system your mower uses, check the operator's manual for your exact model before preparing it for long-term storage.
Mowers with Removable Battery Packs
-
Remove the Batteries + Safety Key
Remove the battery pack or battery packs and the safety key before cleaning, inspecting, or storing the mower.
-
Prepare the Mower Deck
Follow the storage instructions for your exact model.
For example, the 24V-X2-17LM manual instructs users to remove the grass collection bag and place the height-adjustment lever in the lowest cutting-height position.
-
Clean the Mower
Clean the mower using a damp cloth or hand brush.
-
Inspect the Mower
Check for worn, loose, or damaged parts.
Check connections and screws and tighten them if necessary. Pay particular attention to the mower blade and follow the model-specific maintenance instructions if the blade shows wear or damage.
-
Store the Mower Indoors
Store the mower in a dry, clean, and cool indoor location that is out of the reach of children.
Do not store the mower next to corrosive materials such as fertilizer or rock salt.
-
Do Not Use a Solid Plastic Cover
Do not cover the mower with a solid plastic sheet.
The manuals warn that a solid plastic covering can trap moisture around the mower and damage the unit.
-
Fold the Handle When Applicable
Models equipped with a folding or collapsible handle can be folded for more compact storage.
Follow your model's operator's manual for the correct handle-folding procedure.
How Should I Store a Removable IONMAX Battery?
The MJ24C-14-XR manual instructs users to store the lithium-ion battery pack in a cool, dry place between 50°F and 68°F (10°C to 20°C).
Protect the battery, charger, and cordless tool from humidity and direct sunlight.
For storage, the manual specifies that the battery should be charged to at least 40%.
Protect the battery from freezing. The MJ24C-14-XR manual states that a battery pack stored below 32°F (0°C) for more than 60 minutes must be discarded.
Mowers with an Integrated Battery
For an integrated-battery mower such as the MJ401C, the battery remains inside the mower.
-
Remove the Safety Key
Remove the safety key from its slot before cleaning or storing the mower.
-
Clean the Mower
Clean the mower with a damp cloth or hand brush.
-
Inspect the Mower
Inspect the mower for worn, loose, or damaged parts.
Check connections and screws and tighten them when necessary. Inspect the blade and follow the maintenance instructions if it requires sharpening or replacement.
-
Store the Mower Indoors
Store the mower in a dry, clean, and cool indoor location, out of the reach of children.
Keep the mower away from corrosive materials such as fertilizer and rock salt.
-
Avoid Solid Plastic Covers
Do not cover the mower with a solid plastic sheet because trapped moisture can damage the unit.
-
Fold the Handle for Compact Storage
Where provided, loosen the upper-handle knobs and fold the handle down according to the procedure in your mower's operator's manual.
Integrated Battery Care During Long-Term Storage
The MJ401C manual recommends storing and charging the mower in a cool area.
Never store the mower with its integrated battery in a discharged condition. Recharge it immediately after it becomes discharged.
If the mower is stored for a long period without use, the manual recommends recharging the battery every 6 months to help extend battery life.
Do not store an integrated-battery mower in a location where the temperature can reach or exceed 104°F (40°C). The manual specifically identifies outdoor sheds and metal buildings during summer as potentially unsuitable high-temperature storage locations.
Winterization Reminder
Battery-operated Sun Joe lawn mowers do not require gasoline, fuel stabilizer, oil changes, or other gas-engine winterization.
Seasonal storage should follow the applicable mower and battery instructions above: keep the mower clean, dry, inspected, safely keyed off, and stored indoors, while following the correct battery-storage procedure for your specific model.
Why Should I Check My Exact Model?
Storage procedures are not identical across every Sun Joe battery-operated lawn mower.
For example, the 24V-X2-17LM specifically instructs users to remove both batteries, remove the safety key, remove the grass collection bag, and set the mower to its lowest cutting height before storage.
The MJ401C, which uses an integrated battery, instructs users to remove the safety key but does not instruct them to remove the battery.
