Power Joe® Generator Troubleshooting Use this guide to troubleshoot common starting, power, receptacle, and propane connection issues for the Power Joe® portable propane generator. Important safety reminder Use this generator outdoors only and keep it far away from windows, doors, vents, garages, crawlspaces, and any enclosed or partly enclosed space. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. Always use a battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarm in the home. Starting output 4100 watts Running output 3300 watts Fuel type Liquid propane gas only ▶️ Watch the Start-Up Guide Watch the Start-Up Guide Before starting your Power Joe® generator for the first time, watch this start-up guide for a quick visual walkthrough. Start-up safety reminder Always operate the generator outdoors only, at least 20 ft away from windows, doors, and vents. Do not start the generator in a garage, home, crawlspace, or any enclosed or partly enclosed area. Make sure the generator is on a flat, firm surface, the oil level is correct, the propane cylinder is connected and leak-tested, and nothing is plugged into the generator before starting. If the generator has been running, allow it to cool before touching the engine, muffler, spark plug area, or propane connections. Place the generator on a flat, firm surface. Check that the propane cylinder is upright, secured, and not empty. Check the engine lubricant level before each use. Do not operate the generator in rain, snow, wet weather, or with wet hands. Do not use open flame to check for propane leaks. 📌 Quick Troubleshooting Table Problem Possible Cause What To Do No startEngine will not start Low lubricant level, faulty or fouled spark plug, empty propane cylinder, choke lever in RUN position, cold engine, or generator not on a level surface. Check and fill engine lubricant as needed. Replace or refill the propane cylinder. Move the choke lever to START. Move the generator to a warmer area to start if the engine is cold. Check or replace the spark plug if needed. Hard startEngine is hard to start Weak spark at the spark plug. Replace the spark plug or contact a qualified service center. Low powerEngine lacks power Clogged air filter, too much load, or clogged spark arrestor. Clean or replace the air filter element. Reduce the connected load. Clean the spark arrestor screen. Electric startElectric start does not work Engine switch is OFF or battery is not charged. Turn the engine switch ON. Charge the 24V iON+ battery. Use recoil start if the battery needs charging. AC outletAC receptacle does not work AC circuit breaker is tripped or the connected item is defective. Reset the AC circuit breaker. Try a different device. Propane odorSmell of propane gas Propane cylinder valve is open, or hose/valve may be leaking. Immediately close the cylinder valve. Tighten connections only when safe to do so. Inspect hose and valve for damage. Do not operate the generator until the issue is corrected. LeakGas leak detected from cylinder, regulator, or connection Improper installation, loose connections, rust, or mishandling. Turn off the cylinder valve. Tighten fittings if safe. If bubbles still appear during the leak test, stop using the generator and contact customer support or a qualified propane service provider. RegulatorHumming noise from regulator Cylinder valve may have been opened too quickly. Turn off the generator and close the cylinder valve. Reopen the cylinder valve slowly. 🔧 Engine Will Not Start Follow these checks in order. Check oil/lubricant level. Remove the oil cap/dipstick, wipe it clean, re-seat it without threading, then remove it again. The level should be between the L and H marks. Add 4-stroke motor oil if needed. Check propane supply. Confirm the propane cylinder is not empty and is securely mounted in the cylinder bracket. Check the propane connection. Make sure the propane hose is connected to the generator inlet and the cylinder valve connection is centered and hand-tightened. Do not use tools on the cylinder coupler. Open the propane cylinder valve completely. Open the valve slowly to avoid regulator noise or flow issues. Set the choke to START. Move the choke lever all the way LEFT to the START position before starting a cold engine. Make sure nothing is plugged in. Start the generator with no electrical load connected. Start the generator. For electric start, insert the battery, press the engine switch to ON, then press START. For recoil start, pull the recoil grip until the engine runs Move the choke to RUN. After the engine runs for 15–30 seconds, move the choke lever all the way RIGHT to the RUN position. Tip If the generator is not level, it may not start or may shut down during operation. Always place it on a flat, firm surface before starting. 🔋 Electric Start Is Not Working The generator can be started with the included 24V iON+ lithium-ion battery or by recoil start. Confirm the engine switch is in the ON position. Check the battery charge indicator. Charge the battery if needed. A full charge may take up to 5 hours. If the battery is not charged, use recoil start. ⚡ Engine Lacks Power If the engine runs but does not provide enough power, check the load and maintenance items. Reduce the load. The generator provides 3300 running watts and 4100 starting watts. Do not exceed the generator’s wattage capacity. Add loads one at a time. Start the generator with nothing plugged in, let it warm up for 2–3 minutes, then connect the largest load first. Allow the generator output to stabilize before adding the next load. Clean the air filter. Remove the air filter cover and clean the filter element with warm, soapy water if dirty. Rinse and let it dry completely before reinstalling. Clean the spark arrestor. Inspect the spark arrestor screen and remove carbon deposits with a brush as needed. 🔌 AC Receptacle Does Not Work If a connected device does not power on: Unplug the device. Reset the AC circuit breaker by pressing the AC circuit breaker button. Try a different device to confirm whether the issue is the generator outlet or the item being used. Do not continue use if cords, plugs, or receptacles show damage. ⚠️ Propane Smell or Leak Stop immediately If you smell propane, hear escaping gas, or see bubbles during a leak test, close the propane cylinder valve immediately. Move away from the cylinder if the leak continues. Do not smoke, do not use open flame, and do not operate the generator until the issue is corrected. How to perform a leak test Mix 1 part liquid dish soap with 3 parts water. With the cylinder connected, brush or spoon the solution onto the hose, regulator, cylinder valve, and connection points. Open the cylinder valve and look for bubbles. If no bubbles appear, the connection is safe. If bubbles appear, close the cylinder valve, loosen and re-tighten the connection, then test again. If bubbles continue, stop using the generator and contact customer support or a qualified propane service provider. 🏠 Using the Generator for Home Backup PowerContact Shop Joe customer support if the issue continues after completing the steps above, if you find damaged parts, if you detect a leak that does not stop after re-tightening, or if the generator requires service.
