If your Aqua Joe® sprinkler has low water flow, an uneven spray pattern, a leak, or a head that will not oscillate or rotate, follow the checks below. Most performance issues are caused by a hose connection, low water supply, debris, mineral buildup, or an incorrect control setting.
Models covered:
SJI-OMS16, SJI-OMS16-SPK, SJI-OMS18-SPK, SJI-OMS20, SJI-OMS20-SPK, AJ-OSPR20, AJ-IS6WB, AJ-IS10WB, AJ-ISH-2PK, AJ-6PSTB-MAX, AJ-6PSTB-XL, AJ-MSSBM, AJ-MSSBM6, and AJ-TSSBM.
These sprinkler models may also be included in collection bundles such as AJ-SPKLR-BDL and hose-and-sprinkler bundles.
Important: Power Type
These sprinklers are powered by water pressure from a standard garden hose. They do not use a battery, charger, or electrical outlet. Water pressure, hose condition, faucet flow, and the sprinkler’s controls directly affect performance.
Before inspecting or cleaning the sprinkler:
- Turn off the faucet completely.
- Relieve water pressure and disconnect the garden hose.
- Do not point the sprinkler toward people, pets, windows, or vehicles.
- Do not force adjustment controls or place fingers near moving parts while water is flowing.
The Sprinkler Has No Water Flow
Step 1: Check the Water Source
- Confirm the outdoor faucet is fully open and supplying water.
- Disconnect the sprinkler and briefly run water through the garden hose. If flow is weak at the hose, check the faucet, hose, reel, timer, splitter, or other connected accessory.
- Straighten any kinks and fully unwind the hose.
- Reconnect the hose firmly to the sprinkler’s hose-end connector.
Step 2: Check the Sprinkler Controls
- Confirm any sprinkler flow control is open. On AJ-6PSTB-MAX, turn the flow control clockwise to increase flow and turn it on.
- On AJ-OSPR20, turn the water-flow control to increase flow.
- Make sure the selected pattern, range tabs, or collars are not positioned in a way that restricts the expected spray area.
The Spray Is Weak, Uneven, or Clogged
Step 1: Check for Supply Restrictions
- Turn off the faucet and disconnect the sprinkler.
- Check the hose for kinks, damage, or internal blockage.
- Remove other hose accessories temporarily and test the sprinkler directly from the hose.
- Confirm the hose connection is tight and the washer is seated correctly.
Step 2: Clean the Inlet Filter
For models equipped with a removable inlet filter, including SJI-OMS16:
- Remove the inlet filter from the sprinkler’s hose-end.
- Rinse the filter under clean running water to remove dirt, sand, and debris.
- Reinstall the filter firmly before reconnecting the hose.
Step 3: Flush and Clear the Nozzles
- For SJI-OMS16, remove the cleaning pin from the opposite end of the oscillator.
- Connect the oscillator to a spigot. Turn on the water and gently move the tube back and forth for a few minutes to flush out debris.
- Turn off the water and reinstall the inlet filter firmly.
- Use the supplied cleaning pin to clear clogged spray nozzles, then return the pin to its storage position before use.
- For another model, use a cleaning pin only if one is supplied or the exact manual directs you to do so. Do not enlarge or damage the nozzle openings.
The Sprinkler Does Not Oscillate or Rotate Correctly
Step 1: Confirm Adequate Water Flow
- Open the faucet enough to provide a steady supply.
- Remove hose kinks and unnecessary accessories that may restrict flow.
- Clean the inlet filter and nozzles if your model includes them.
Step 2: Check the Correct Sprinkler Controls
Oscillating Sprinklers
SJI-OMS16, SJI-OMS16-SPK, SJI-OMS18-SPK, SJI-OMS20, SJI-OMS20-SPK, AJ-OSPR20
Check the sliding tabs or range controls. If the model has separate width and range controls, confirm both are set for the intended area. AJ-OSPR20 also includes water-flow control and a 360° adjustable neck.
Impulse Sprinklers
AJ-IS6WB, AJ-IS10WB, AJ-ISH-2PK
Set the friction collars for partial-circle coverage or use the trip lever for full-circle coverage. Use the deflector shield for distance and the diffuser pin for jet-to-mist adjustment.
Turbo-Drive and Tripod Sprinklers
AJ-6PSTB-MAX, AJ-6PSTB-XL, AJ-MSSBM, AJ-MSSBM6
Check the coverage tabs, selected spray pattern, distance control, rotation setting, and flow-control valve where equipped.
Turret Sprinkler
AJ-TSSBM
Rotate the turret to a fully selected pattern. Its nine patterns include rectangle, wide strip, narrow strip, semicircle, square, soft square, circle, ring, and rotor. The pop-up rotor retracts when the water is off.
Do not force a stuck control. Turn off and disconnect the water, then inspect for debris, mineral buildup, or visible damage.
Water Leaks at the Hose Connection
- Turn off the faucet and disconnect the hose.
- Inspect the hose-end washer for flattening, cracks, cuts, or absence. AJ-OSPR20 specifically requires a rubber washer inside the hose-end.
- Replace a worn or missing washer with the correct size.
- Inspect the hose threads and sprinkler connector for dirt, cross-threading, cracks, or other damage.
- Reconnect the hose straight and hand-tighten it. Do not overtighten.
- Turn the water on gradually and check the connection again.
Routine Maintenance and Storage
- Drain after every use. Turn off the water, disconnect the hose, and allow all water to drain from the sprinkler.
- Keep the water path clean. Periodically rinse a removable inlet filter and clear nozzles only with the supplied or manual-approved cleaning tool.
- Inspect adjustment controls. Make sure tabs, collars, dials, shields, valves, tripod locks, and rotating or oscillating parts move normally. Do not force them.
- Check the connection. Inspect the hose-end connector and washer for wear, cracks, or leakage.
- Protect the sprinkler. Do not drop it, step on it, drag it by the hose, or leave it where vehicles or lawn equipment can crush it.
- Store it dry. Keep the sprinkler indoors or in a protected, dry location away from prolonged sunlight when not in use. Collapse the AJ-6PSTB-MAX tripod legs for storage.
- Winterize before freezing weather. Completely drain the sprinkler and hose and store them where water cannot freeze. Water left inside can expand below 32°F (0°C) and damage the product.
When to Stop and Escalate
Stop troubleshooting and arrange further support if:
- The sprinkler body, base, hose-end connector, tripod, oscillator tube, or sprinkler head is cracked or broken.
- Water leaks from the body rather than the hose connection.
- The unit remains blocked after the approved filter, flushing, and nozzle-cleaning steps.
- A control is seized, broken, or cannot be moved without force.
- The sprinkler still will not oscillate or rotate with adequate water flow and clean water passages.
