If the telescoping pole on your Snow Joe® Snow Broom will not extend, retract, or lock, follow the steps below. The pole uses a manual twist-lock mechanism and should adjust without tools.
Model covered:
SJBLZD - Snow Joe Original 2-in-1 Telescoping Snow Broom with Ice Scraper
Manual Tool33-52 in. PoleTwist-Lock Adjustment
Important: Power Type
The SJBLZD is a manual snow-removal tool. The telescoping pole adjusts by twisting the pole sections to loosen and lock them.
Before adjusting the pole:
- Stop using the broom and place it away from the vehicle.
- Make sure your hands and the pole are dry enough to maintain a secure grip.
- Hold the pole sections securely and keep fingers away from the sliding joint.
- Do not use a hammer, mallet, pliers, wrench, or other tool on the pole.
- Do not bend, strike, or apply excessive force to the locking mechanism.
The Pole Will Not Extend
Step 1: Loosen the Telescoping Pole
- Hold the lower section of the pole firmly with one hand.
- Grip the upper section near the telescoping joint with your other hand.
- Twist the pole to loosen the locking mechanism. The official quick guide does not specify a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, so do not continue forcing the pole if the first direction does not loosen it.
Step 2: Extend and Lock the Pole
- Once the lock is loose, slide the pole outward to the desired length.
- Do not extend the pole beyond its designed maximum length of 52 in. (132 cm).
- Twist the pole to lock it in position.
- Before use, gently pull and push on the pole to confirm that it remains securely locked.
The Pole Still Feels Stuck
Step 1: Check the Correct Joint
- Locate the joint where one pole section slides into the other.
- Hold one section on each side of that joint.
- Try the approved sequence again: twist to loosen, adjust the length, then twist to lock.
Step 2: Inspect Before Trying Again
- Stop pulling on the pole.
- Check the telescoping sections and joint for visible bending, dents, cracks, separation, or foreign material.
- If the pole appears straight and undamaged, make one more adjustment attempt using hand pressure only.
- If it still will not move, stop troubleshooting and follow the escalation guidance below.
The Pole Will Not Retract
- Hold the pole securely on both sides of the telescoping joint.
- Twist the pole to loosen the lock.
- Slide the upper section inward. The shortest designed handle length is 33 in. (84 cm).
- Twist the pole to lock it for storage.
The Pole Extends but Will Not Lock
- Shorten the pole slightly so it is not at or beyond its maximum extension.
- Hold the selected length and twist the pole to engage the lock.
- Test the lock with a gentle push and pull before using the broom.
- If the pole slides after being locked, stop using it. An unsecured pole can collapse during use.
When to Stop and Escalate
Stop using the snow broom and arrange further support if:
- The pole remains stuck after the approved twist-loosen-adjust-lock sequence.
- The pole will not stay locked or collapses during a gentle test.
- The pole is bent, dented, cracked, separated, or visibly damaged.
- The locking joint spins freely, feels detached, or requires excessive force.
- The foam broom head, scraper, or attachment point is loose or damaged.
