Silica Dust Notice
Respirable silica dust warning: This product contains crystalline silica.
Avoid breathing dust generated during use, pouring, or handling. Use outdoors or in
well-ventilated areas. If dust is generated during use, wear a NIOSH-approved dust mask.
Prolonged or repeated exposure to silica dust may cause lung disease. This product is
dust-minimized but not dust-free. Keep exposure minimal, especially for children and
individuals with respiratory conditions.
For Aquarium Use
- Rinse sand thoroughly with clean water before adding to any aquarium to remove any remaining fine particles
- Allow water to fully clear before introducing fish or other aquatic life
- This sand is inert and will not alter water chemistry for most freshwater applications — test water parameters before introducing sensitive species
For Garden & Plant Use
- When mixing into potting soil, use as a drainage amendment — typically 10–30% sand by volume
- Avoid using as a sole growing medium — this sand does not contain nutrients

For Sandboxes & Sensory Tables

does not enter the eyes, nose, or mouth. Always wash hands after play.
Can I use this sand in my aquarium?
Yes, this sand works well as an aquarium substrate for freshwater tanks.
Before adding it to your tank, rinse it thoroughly in a bucket with clean
water — swirling and pouring until the water runs completely clear. Silica
sand is chemically inert in freshwater aquariums and will not significantly
affect pH or water hardness. Allow 24–48 hours for any remaining fine particles
to settle after filling. It is not recommended for reef or saltwater marine
tanks where specific aragonite substrates are preferred.
How much sand do I need for my sandbox?

Can this sand be used outdoors?
Yes — this sand is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. For outdoor
sandboxes, always use a weather-resistant cover when not in use to protect
from rain, animals, and debris. If the sand gets wet from rain, allow it
to dry completely in sunlight before covering or returning to covered storage.
Wet or contaminated sand should be inspected before allowing children to
play in it.
Why does my aquarium water look cloudy after adding the sand?
Fine silica particles can temporarily cloud aquarium water even after rinsing
— this is normal. Simply run your filter and wait 24–48 hours. The particles
are very light and will gradually settle and be captured by filtration. If
cloudiness persists beyond 72 hours, perform a 25% water change and continue
running the filter. For future use, rinsing more thoroughly (multiple cycles
until the water runs perfectly clear) will reduce this.
Can I use this sand in a zen or decorative garden?
Absolutely. The ultra-fine white silica grain creates beautiful patterns
when raked, making it ideal for Japanese zen garden designs, tabletop meditation
gardens, decorative terrariums, and landscape accents. Its clean white color
provides excellent contrast against dark stones, driftwood, or green plants.
Can I use this sand for sandblasting?
No. Sun Joe® Ultra Fine Silica Play Sand is not formulated or rated for sandblasting
applications. Sandblasting requires specific abrasive media specifications
and generates dangerous levels of respirable silica dust. Using play sand
for sandblasting poses serious health and safety hazards. Please use sand
products specifically rated and designed for abrasive blasting only.
How should I store leftover sand?
Reseal the original bag tightly, or transfer remaining sand to an airtight
container (such as a plastic bucket with a lid). Store in a dry, well-ventilated
area away from moisture and direct sunlight. Properly stored sand will maintain
its quality indefinitely. Do not store in areas subject to freezing and thawing
cycles, as moisture can cause clumping.
