Troubleshooting Steps and Cylinder Replacement
Electric Dethatcher
Use these steps if a corded electric dethatcher does not start or power on.
- Check the extension cord. Make sure the correct outdoor extension cord is being used.
- Check both connections. Confirm the extension cord is securely connected to the dethatcher and power source.
- Press the safety lock. Press and hold the safety lock button.
- Pull the switch lever. While holding the safety lock button, pull the switch lever toward you.
- Release the safety lock. Once the unit turns on, release the safety lock button while continuing to hold the switch lever.
Battery-Powered Dethatcher
Use these steps if a battery-powered dethatcher does not start or power on.
- Seat the battery. Make sure the battery or batteries click into place in the battery compartment and lock securely.
- Press the safety lock. Press and hold the safety lock button.
- Pull the switch lever. While holding the safety lock button, pull the switch lever toward you.
- Release the safety lock. Once the unit turns on, release the safety lock button while continuing to hold the switch lever.

Other Troubleshooting Checks
Use the checks below only when they apply to your specific dethatcher model. Turn the machine off and disconnect its power source before clearing debris or inspecting the cylinder.
Motor will not start
AJ801E and AJ805E corded models: Confirm that the unit is connected to a working power supply. Press the safety lock or lock-off button first, then pull the switch lever. Do not use the unit if the cord or plug is damaged; contact Customer Care for assistance.
AJ805E: If the machine has overheated, disconnect power, clean accumulated grass clippings around the cylinder, allow the unit to cool, and then restart it as described in the manual.
24V-X2-DTS15 cordless models: Confirm the batteries are charged and seated correctly, then follow the model's safety-lock and switch-lever starting sequence. Refer to the manual for your exact model.
Dethatcher runs but does not reach full power
For AJ801E and AJ805E, use an extension cord suitable for the unit and keep the motor air vents clear of debris. The AJ801E manual also lists insufficient power-source voltage as a possible cause and directs users to try another appropriate power source.
Dethatching or scarifying results are poor
The AJ801E and AJ805E manuals identify a worn cutting cylinder, excessive material, or an incorrect working-depth setting as possible causes. Check the selected depth and operate within the machine's intended capacity. If the cylinder is worn, follow the exact model manual for cylinder replacement and use the specified replacement part.
If you are mechanically inclined: If the motor runs but the cylinder does not turn, a drive-belt issue may be worth checking. First switch the unit OFF, unplug it or remove the batteries, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Only inspect the belt if it is safely accessible using the procedures in your exact model’s manual. Look for obvious signs of a loose, damaged, or displaced belt; do not operate the unit with covers removed or attempt belt adjustment or replacement unless the manual specifically provides instructions. If access requires opening the motor or drive housing, contact Shop Joe Customer Care or a qualified service professional instead.
Where can I find the correct manual?
Check the model number on your dethatcher and consult the corresponding operator's manual:
- AJ801E operator's manual
- AJ805E operator's manual
- Shop Joe product manuals lookup (including cordless models)
For the cordless 24V-X2-DTS15, use its specific manual rather than applying corded-model procedures.
