Wood Shipper Troubleshooting This guide helps you troubleshoot your Sun Joe® Electric Wood Chipper + Shredder by model. Use the CJ601E/CJ602E steps if your unit will not start, has jammed material, is not pulling material in, or is cutting poorly. Use the separate CJ603E steps for reset, reverse mode, feeding issues, and counterplate adjustment. The guide also includes safety reminders, clog-clearing tips, and guidance for reducing frequent jams.Sun Joe® Wood Chipper + ShredderTroubleshooting StepsUse the correct model section below before troubleshooting. CJ601E and CJ602E share the same steps. CJ603E has different steps.Safety First Always turn the chipper + shredder OFF, unplug it from the outlet, and wait for all moving parts to stop before checking the hopper, feed inlet, feeding funnel, discharge chute, ejection slot, blades, or counterplate. Never place your hands inside the hopper. Always use the supplied paddle.Model Match Reminder Use the CJ601E/CJ602E section only for CJ601E and CJ602E. Use the CJ603E section only for CJ603E. This helps prevent model-specific troubleshooting steps from being mixed together.🔌 Motor Does Not RunCJ601E + CJ602ECJ601E + CJ602EConfirm the unit is plugged into a working outlet.Check that the extension cord is fully connected and not damaged.Remove the red knob by turning it counter-clockwise. Once you open the top portion, also called the hopper, give it a good hard shake to help loosen any chips or debris.Screw the red knob back clockwise until secure.Remove the safety switch located between the ON/OFF switch. Place the safety switch back into position.Plug the unit in.Turn the unit ON and test operation.Important The unit will not run if the hopper is open or not closed tightly. Make sure the hopper is secured and the red hopper locking knob is tightened before restarting.CJ603E OnlyCJ603E OnlyConfirm the unit is plugged into a working outlet.Check that the extension cord is fully connected and not damaged.To restart the wood chipper + shredder, first press the reset button.Push the reverse end of the forward/reverse switch.Press the ON button. If there is a jammed item, the shredder will push it back up the feeding funnel.Turn the machine OFF.Press the forward end of the forward/reverse switch.Press the ON button to resume normal operation.Important Use these reverse-switch steps for CJ603E only. CJ601E and CJ602E do not use the same forward/reverse switch process.🌿 Material Is Not Being Pulled InCJ601E + CJ602ECJ601E + CJ602ETurn the unit OFF and unplug it from the power supply.Wait for all moving parts to stop completely.Check the feed inlet for jammed material.Open the hopper and examine the cutting head.Remove any blocked material from the cutting head.Replace and secure the hopper before restarting.If the cutting blades are blocked, unplug the unit and open the hopper.Open the blade cover, remove the blocked material, then replace the blade cover and hopper.If the discharge chute is blocked, unplug the unit and open the hopper.Open the discharge chute plate, clear the blocked material, then replace the plate and hopper.Make sure all covers, plates, and the hopper are secured before restarting.Important Do not place your hands inside the hopper, feed inlet, discharge chute, or cutting area. Use the supplied paddle or an appropriate tool to help clear material only after the unit is unplugged and fully stopped.CJ603E OnlyCJ603E OnlyTurn the unit OFF and unplug it from the power supply.Wait for all moving parts to stop completely.Examine the feeding funnel and remove any blocked material.Check whether the cutting blades are blocked.If material is jammed, push the reverse end of the forward/reverse switch and press the ON button to help push jammed material back up the feeding funnel.Turn the machine OFF after the jammed material is pushed back up.Examine the ejection slot and remove any blocked material.Press the forward end of the forward/reverse switch.Press the ON button to resume normal operation.Model Reminder Use these steps only for CJ603E because this model has a forward/reverse switch and ejection slot troubleshooting.✂️ Blades Cut InefficientlyCJ601E + CJ602ECJ601E + CJ602ETurn the unit OFF and unplug it from the power supply.Wait for all moving parts to stop.Wear protective gloves before handling the blades.Open the hopper.Inspect the blade edges for wear.Reverse the blades if one side is worn.Replace the blades if both sides are worn or damaged.Secure the hopper before restarting.CJ603E OnlyCJ603E OnlyTurn the unit OFF and unplug it from the power supply.Wait for all moving parts to stop.Check whether shredding is incomplete or uneven.Adjust the counterplate by turning the counterplate adjusting knob clockwise.Stop turning when a slight friction noise is heard and fine aluminum shavings fall from the ejection slot.Plug the unit back in and test shredding performance.If cutting is still inefficient, replace the counterplate.🚫 Unit Clogs or OverloadsAll ModelsTurn the unit OFF and unplug it from the power supply.Wait for all moving parts to stop.Remove excess material from the hopper, feeding funnel, or feed inlet.Clear the discharge chute or ejection slot if material cannot exit freely.Wait at least 1 minute after overload protection activates.Press the reset button.Restart the unit only after all blockages are cleared.Feed material slowly and do not overload the unit.Alternate damp or wilted yard waste with dry branches to help prevent clogging.🧹 Poor Shredding or Frequent JamsAll ModelsDo not feed material faster than the unit can process it.Remove soil, stones, metal, glass, cans, and other foreign objects before shredding.Do not shred soft, damp kitchen waste.Let wilted or damp yard waste dry for a few days when possible.Alternate damp or wilted material with dry branches.Make sure shredded material can fall freely from the discharge area.Keep a few dry branches for the end of use to help clean the unit.Only turn the unit OFF after all shredded material has passed through the discharge area.
