Is your Sun Joe electric chainsaw not starting or cutting properly? Confirm the model number on your saw before following the steps below. Chain-brake features differ between models, and the correct troubleshooting depends on the specific saw.
Quick reference: This guide is for SWJ698E, SWJ699E, SWJ700E, and SWJ701E only. Confirm the exact model label before troubleshooting. These are corded handheld electric saws; cordless X20 models and pole saws have separate instructions. Chain-brake checks apply only where explicitly confirmed for the model.
Models Covered + Power Type
This article applies only to the following corded handheld electric chainsaws.
Before You Troubleshoot
Safety first: Release the trigger, unplug the chainsaw, and wait for the chain to stop completely before inspecting the chain, guide bar, oil reservoir, or other components. Wear appropriate protective gloves when handling a stationary chain. Never run a chainsaw with its bar, chain, or protective covers removed. Do not bypass safety switches or guards.
Saw Will Not Start — All Covered Models
-
Disconnect Before Inspection
Unplug the saw. Check the power cord, plug, and extension cord for visible damage. Do not use damaged electrical equipment.
-
Confirm the Power Source
Check that the outlet has power and that the extension-cord connection is secure. Use an extension cord appropriate for outdoor power tools as specified in the model manual.
-
Inspect for Obstructions
With the saw unplugged, check for obvious damage or a jammed chain. Do not attempt to operate a jammed or damaged saw.
-
Follow the Model Starting Procedure
After the saw is fully assembled and all guards are in place, use the safety switch and trigger according to the exact model manual.
-
Stop if the Problem Continues
If the saw still will not start, unplug it and contact Shop Joe Customer Care.
Chain-brake troubleshooting is not a universal step. See the model-specific section below.
Chain Brake — SWJ700E and SWJ701E Only
-
Verify the Model
Confirm the label reads SWJ700E or SWJ701E. Shop Joe identifies these models as having a safety handguard with kickback-brake function.
-
Consult the Correct Manual
With the saw unplugged, follow the operator’s manual for the model’s chain-brake position and inspection procedure. Do not force the guard or defeat the brake.
-
Stop for Damage or Failure
If the handguard or brake appears damaged, does not operate as described in the manual, or the saw still does not start, stop using the saw and contact Customer Care.
Not applicable to SWJ698E. Do not apply these steps to SWJ699E unless its exact manual establishes that the unit has the relevant brake.
Chain Moves but Does Not Cut Properly
-
Disconnect Power
Unplug the chainsaw and allow the chain to stop.
-
Inspect the Cutting Components
Check for obvious dullness, damage, incorrect chain orientation, or a damaged guide bar.
-
Check Model-Specific Tension
Follow the exact model’s operator manual for chain tension and chain orientation. Do not use another model’s chain dimensions or adjustment procedure.
-
Escalate if Necessary
Do not continue using a damaged, dull, or improperly tensioned chain. Contact Customer Care if the issue cannot be resolved using the manual.
Leaking Oil
-
Inspect the Oil Reservoir
Unplug the saw and allow the chain to stop. Check the oil cap, reservoir, and visible exterior for cracks, looseness, or oil residue.
-
Check Filling and Storage
Use only the bar-and-chain oil specified for the model. Follow the manual for filling and storage; do not overfill.
-
Escalate Persistent Leakage
If oil continues leaking after the cap and reservoir are checked, stop using the saw and contact Customer Care. Do not open the oil pump or internal housing.
Not Cutting Properly
-
Inspect Chain Condition
Unplug the saw. Check for a dull, damaged, or incorrectly oriented chain and visible guide-bar damage.
-
Check Chain Tension
Use the exact model manual for the chain-tension procedure. Do not operate a loose, excessively tight, or damaged chain.
-
Check Lubrication
Confirm the reservoir has the specified bar-and-chain oil. Do not continue cutting if the chain is not receiving lubrication.
-
Seek Assistance
If cutting performance remains poor after manual-approved checks, stop use and contact Customer Care.
Sprocket Replacement or Suspected Drive Damage
-
Stop and Unplug
If the chain slips, jams, or makes unusual grinding noises, release the trigger and unplug the chainsaw.
-
Inspect Without Operating
With the chain stationary, check for obvious external chain or bar damage. Do not operate the saw with covers removed.
-
Request Model-Specific Service
Sprocket inspection or replacement must follow the exact model manual and applicable service instructions. If damage is suspected or the procedure is unclear, contact Customer Care rather than attempting unverified disassembly.
Oil Not Dispensing
-
Check Oil Level
Unplug the chainsaw and inspect the oil level and oil cap. Refill only with the lubricant specified in the model manual.
-
Inspect for Visible Blockage
With the saw unplugged, check for visible sawdust buildup around accessible bar and chain areas. Follow the manual for any permitted cleaning.
-
Use the Manual’s Lubrication Check
Use only the fully assembled, model-specific oil-delivery check described in the operator manual. Never run the motor with the bar, chain, or protective covers removed.
-
Stop if the Chain Remains Dry
If lubrication cannot be confirmed, do not continue cutting. Contact Customer Care.
