Assembly
- Disconnect the power. Keep the cultivator unplugged while assembling or adjusting parts.
- Attach the auxiliary handle. Snap the auxiliary handle onto the machine.
- Secure the handle. Insert the locking knob through the auxiliary handle and tighten it firmly.
- Set the handle angle. To reposition it, loosen the knob, move the handle, and tighten the knob again.
- Adjust the shaft. Press the slide-lock button, extend the tube to a comfortable length, and release the button to lock it. Confirm the tube is locked before use.
Getting Started
- Prepare the work area. Remove rocks, sticks, wires, and other objects, check for hidden utility hazards, and keep children, pets, and bystanders at least 25 feet away.
- Connect the cord securely. Use the onboard extension cord restraint hook with an outdoor-rated cord, then plug into a suitable GFCI-protected outlet.
- Start the cultivator. Hold the tool firmly with both hands, press the safety lock button, squeeze the trigger switch, and then release the safety lock button.
- Guide the tool lightly. Move slowly backward and let the cultivator crawl forward in a rocking motion, using repeated passes to work deeper without forcing the tines.
- Manage the cord. Work away from the outlet and keep the extension cord behind you and outside the cultivating path.
- Stop safely. Release the trigger switch, unplug the tool, and wait for the tines to stop completely before lifting, inspecting, adjusting, or cleaning it.
Maintenance, Care & Storage
- Switch off, unplug, and wait for the tines to stop completely. Allow the motor housing and gearbox to cool before handling.
- Wear protective gloves. After every use, remove soil, dirt, and foliage from the tines, driveshaft, tool surfaces, and vents with a brush or dry cloth.
- Spray or rub biodegradable oil onto the tines, and clean soiled grips with a damp cloth.
- Do not use cleaning fluids or solvents, and do not spray the unit with water or pressurized water.
- Inspect the machine for worn or damaged parts, loose nuts, bolts, or screws, and missing or damaged safety labels and guards.
- Store indoors in a dry, high, or locked location out of children’s reach.
Troubleshooting
The cultivator stops during use
Possible Causes
- The unit is not fully assembled.
- The extension cord is not suitable, damaged, or too long.
- The startup sequence is not being followed correctly.
Solutions
- For your safety, please release the trigger and unplug the unit before performing any checks.
- Make sure the unit is fully assembled and that all handle knobs are securely tightened.
- Confirm that you are using an outdoor-rated extension cord. Inspect the extension cord for any cuts, damage, or loose connections, and make sure it does not exceed 100 feet in length.
- If your extension cord is 50 feet or shorter, verify that it is 14 AWG.
- To start the unit, press and hold the safety lock button, then squeeze the trigger switch while continuing to hold the safety lock button.

The cultivator is difficult to guide or will not dig deeper
Possible Causes
- The soil is extremely hard or resistant.
- The tool is being forced too deeply in one pass.
Solutions
- Remove surface obstructions and use light pressure.
- Work slowly backward and forward in repeated passes, and do not use the unit in extremely hard soil.
The cultivator vibrates abnormally
Possible Causes
- Debris is trapped around the tines.
- Hardware is loose or a component is damaged.
Solutions
- Stop immediately, unplug the unit, wait for the tines to stop, and remove trapped debris.
- Check for loose hardware or visible damage. Do not use the cultivator if damage is found or vibration continues; contact Shop Joe Customer Support.
