What’s in the Box
- TRJ13STE electric grass trimmer + edger with auto-feed spool
- Safety guard with mounting screw
- Edger guide + flower guard
- Manual with registration card
Assembly
- Install the safety guard. Using a screwdriver, remove the screw from the motor housing, align the guard with the screw hole, press it firmly into place, and reinstall the screw.
- Attach the edger guide + flower guard. Lightly spread the guard and fit its curved ends into the small holes on both sides of the motor housing.
- Adjust the auxiliary handle. Loosen the handle knob, position the handle for comfortable control, and tighten the knob securely.
- Set the pole length. With the unit unplugged, loosen the telescoping locking coupler, extend or shorten the tube, and retighten the coupler.
Getting Started
- Prepare the area. Remove stones, sticks, wire, and other debris; trim only dry grass in daylight or adequate artificial light; and keep children, pets, and bystanders at least 50 feet away.
- Secure the extension cord. Use an outdoor-rated polarized extension cord, form a loop through the rear-handle opening, place it over the restraint hook, and connect the plug to a GFCI-protected outlet.
- Start the trimmer. Hold the rear and auxiliary handles firmly, keep the head clear of all objects, press and hold the safety lock button, and squeeze the ON/OFF trigger.
- Trim with the line tip. Hold the head about 10°–30° to the work area and sweep slowly from side to side, taking small cuts from the top down instead of forcing the tool.
- Convert to edging. Switch off and unplug the tool, flip down the edger guide, pull up the edging coupler, rotate the rear handle counterclockwise until it locks, then rotate the whole unit 180°.
- Edge backward. Use the guard edge as a guide near walls or fences and move backward around lawn edges to help prevent damage.
- Stop safely. Release the trigger, unplug the tool, and wait for the spool to stop completely before adjusting, cleaning, or inspecting it.
Maintenance, Care & Storage
- Unplug the trimmer and wait for the spool to stop completely before cleaning, inspecting, or changing the spool.
- Remove grass and debris from the cutting head, spool area, guard, and ventilation slots. Wipe the tool with a dry cloth.
- Clean plastic parts only with mild soap and a damp cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or allow liquid inside the tool.
- Inspect the power cord, extension cord, guard, spool, and other parts before each use. Do not operate with damaged parts.
- Use only 0.063-inch nylon line and authorized replacement spools. Keep all cutting-head and cover areas clean.
- Store spare line in a resealable plastic bag with a tablespoon of water to help prevent drying.
- Store the clean trimmer indoors in a dry, secure place away from children and extreme temperatures. Hang it by the upper handgrip so the guard does not rest against a surface.
Troubleshooting
The motor does not run or the tool runs slowly
Possible Causes
- The power supply has failed, or the unit is not connected to a working outlet.
- The spool housing cannot rotate freely.
- The cutting line does not protrude correctly.
Solutions
- Confirm the unit is connected to a working outlet and the extension cord is undamaged.
- Unplug the tool, remove the spool, and carefully clean grass, weeds, and debris from the slots.
- Adjust the line so it reaches the line-trimming blade. If the trimmer still does not start, contact an authorized service center.
The automatic line feed does not work
Possible Causes
- Grass has accumulated around the trimming blade.
- The spool is empty, bound, twisted, dirty, or does not expose enough line.
Solutions
- Stop and unplug the tool, then clean the trimming blade and auto-feed area.
- Install a new authorized spool, or remove the cover and pull out line until it reaches the trimming blade.
The line does not cut off
Possible Causes
- The line cutter is covered, damaged, or missing.
- The line extends past the guard.
Solutions
- Unplug the tool and remove debris from the line-cutter area.
- Rewind or trim the line to the cutter. If the cutter is damaged or missing, stop using the tool and contact Shop Joe Customer Support.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of work is the TRJ13STE designed for?
It is designed for cutting lawn grass and trimming or edging along the borders of flower beds. Do not use it for other cutting applications.
Can I use the TRJ13STE in rain or on wet grass?
No. Do not expose the trimmer to rain or use it in wet, damp, or excessively humid conditions. Trim only when grass and weeds are dry.
What extension cord should I use?
Use an outdoor-rated UL-, CSA-, or ETL-listed polarized extension cord. Use 16 AWG for a cord up to 50 feet or 14 AWG for a cord over 50 feet and up to 100 feet. Do not use a cord longer than 100 feet.
What replacement line does it use?
Use 0.063-inch nylon line. The manual identifies the authorized TRJ13STE-RS-6PK dual-line pre-wound spool six-pack for replacement.
Can I use the trimmer below 50°F?
The manual advises against use below 50°F (10°C) because nylon cutting line is more likely to break in cooler temperatures.
Where are the model and serial numbers located?
Both numbers are printed on the decal located on the unit housing.
