If your cordless chainsaw or pole saw will not turn on, first check the battery, safety controls, and correct starting procedure for your exact model.
Shop Joe's Chainsaws + Pole Saws collection includes different systems, including 20V ECOSHARP and 24V/48V IONMAX, and the controls are not identical on every saw.
Before inspecting, adjusting, or servicing the saw, remove the battery or batteries.
Why Won't My Cordless Saw Turn On?
-
Check the Battery
Make sure the battery is charged and is the correct battery system for your saw.
Insert the battery into the battery compartment until it clicks and locks into position.
Models that require two batteries, such as the 24V-X2-CS16, require both batteries to be installed.
-
Check the Safety Control
Cordless chainsaws and pole saws use a safety lock switch or safety lock button to help prevent accidental starting.
The safety control must be operated as described in the manual before the trigger can start the saw.
-
Use the Correct Starting Sequence
Starting procedures vary by model. Follow the instructions below that match your saw.
Starting a 24V Cordless Chainsaw
On models such as the 24V-10CS:
-
Check the Front Hand Brake
Make sure the front hand brake is in the OFF position.
-
Install the Battery
Insert the battery into the battery compartment and push it in until it is locked in place.
-
Hold the Saw Securely
Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands on the handles.
-
Start the Saw
Slide the safety lock switch, then squeeze the trigger switch.
Once the chainsaw is running, the safety lock switch can be released.
To stop the 24V-10CS, release the trigger switch.
Starting a 48V Cordless Chainsaw
The 24V-X2-CS16 uses two 24V IONMAX batteries together.
-
Check the Front Hand Brake
Make sure the front hand brake is in the OFF position.
-
Install Both Batteries
Insert both batteries into the battery compartment.
-
Start the Saw
Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, press the safety lock button, then squeeze the trigger switch.
Once the chainsaw is running, release the safety lock button.
Starting a 24V Cordless Pole Saw
On models such as the 24V-PS8:
-
Install the Battery
Slide the battery into the battery compartment until it clicks into position.
-
Use the Safety Lock
Push and hold the safety lock switch forward with your thumb.
-
Squeeze the Trigger
While holding the safety lock, squeeze the ON/OFF trigger switch.
Once the pole saw is running, release the safety lock switch.
Cordless pole saw controls can differ from handheld chainsaw controls. Do not look for or operate a front hand brake unless your exact model is equipped with one.
What If the Saw Does Not Start and the Chain Does Not Move?
On chainsaw models equipped with a front hand brake, an engaged brake can prevent normal operation.
Check the front hand brake and return it to the OFF position before starting the saw.
This guidance applies only to models equipped with a front hand brake. The older FAQ should not be applied universally to every cordless pole saw or handheld pruning saw.
What Safety Features Does My Cordless Saw Have?
Safety features vary by product.
| Product Type | Safety Controls + Features |
|---|---|
| 24V-10CS Cordless Chainsaw | Front hand guard with kick-back brake, safety lock switch, and cutting bar sheath. |
| 24V-X2-CS16 Cordless Chainsaw | Front hand brake and safety lock button. The saw also uses a working-load indicator that warns when the saw is overloaded. |
| 24V Cordless Pole Saws | Safety lock switch helps prevent unintentional starting. The operator's manual also instructs users to hold the pole saw with both hands during operation. |
| 20V ECOSHARP X20 Pruning Saw | Safety lock button, chain/sprocket end cover, and bar sheath help protect against accidental starts or contact. |
What If the 24V-X2-CS16 Shuts Off During Use?
The 24V-X2-CS16 includes a working-load indicator.
- Yellow: the saw is ready to make a cut.
- Green: the saw is operating normally.
- Red: the saw is overloaded.
If an overload causes the saw to shut off automatically, switch the saw off, remove the batteries, and allow the saw and batteries to cool before resuming work.
Before Trying Again
For cordless chainsaw models such as the 24V-10CS and 24V-X2-CS16, the manuals also instruct users to check that:
- The chain is correctly tensioned and is not damaged.
- The hand grips and protective devices are securely installed.
- The safety lock and trigger move freely and return to their normal positions.
- The trigger remains locked until the safety control is operated.
- The cooling air vents are not blocked by sawdust or debris.
- The chain oil level is sufficient on models equipped with an oil tank.
Remove the battery or batteries before performing these checks. Do not open or disassemble the motor or electrical components.
