Before You Begin
Check the carton contents against the operator's manual (page 10):
- Telescoping pole with auxiliary handle
- Chain saw head with chain and guide bar pre-mounted
- Chain saw bar sheath
- 24V IONMAX lithium-ion battery (24VBAT-LTE)
- 24V IONMAX lithium-ion battery charger (24VCHRG-AC)
- Hex key wrench
- Operator's manual
Safety first: Keep the battery removed throughout assembly and all adjustments. Wear heavy-duty protective gloves when handling the chain and bar. Do not operate a partially assembled saw or one with damaged components. Keep the bar sheath in place whenever you are not inspecting the bar or chain. Never work within 50 ft (15 m) of power lines.
Assemble Your Pole Chain Saw
-
Inspect the Pre-Mounted Bar and Chain
Confirm that the 8-inch guide bar, cutting chain, and chain/sprocket end cover are installed and undamaged. They are supplied pre-mounted. With the battery removed and gloves on, check that the cold chain has no sag beneath the bar and can be moved by hand without binding. See pages 11–13 and 17 of the manual for bar, chain and tension instructions.
-
Open the Pole's Assembly Lock
Locate and open the assembly lock at the end of the telescoping pole (manual, Fig. 12).
-
Connect the Saw Head
Push the chain saw head into the opening at the end of the telescoping pole until the lock tabs snap into place (Figs. 12–13).
-
Secure the Assembly Lock
Close the assembly lock and gently check that the saw head is firmly connected. Do not use the saw if the head or lock is loose (Fig. 13).
-
Set and Lock the Pole Length
With the battery still removed, open the telescoping lock, pull the pole sections apart to the minimum length needed for the job, then close the telescoping lock. Verify that the pole cannot slide unexpectedly (Figs. 16–17).
-
Choose the Saw Head Angle
Press the rotating buttons on both sides of the head simultaneously and rotate to 0°, 15°, or 30°. Release both buttons and verify the head is securely locked at the selected angle (Figs. 18–19).
-
Adjust the Auxiliary Handle if Needed
The auxiliary handle is supplied on the pole. To change its angle, loosen its lock knob, rotate the handle to -45°, 0°, or 45°, and tighten the knob again (Fig. 23). The manual also describes relocating the handle along the pole using the handle loops, screws, bolt, and knob (pages 14–15).
Prepare for First Use
Add bar and chain oil before running the saw. Remove the oil tank cap and add quality bar and chain oil to the top of the oil level window (manual, Fig. 24). The saw has an automatic oiler but requires oil in the tank to function correctly. Refill when the level drops to about one-quarter of the tank.
Charge the battery fully before first use. Connect the supplied 24VCHRG-AC charger to a suitable outlet and the battery's charging socket. Charging takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. When all three battery LEDs remain illuminated, unplug the charger from the wall first, then disconnect it from the battery (page 11, Fig. 2).
Insert the battery only after completing all checks. Slide it into the battery compartment until it clicks (Fig. 14). To start, push the safety lock switch forward, then squeeze the On/Off trigger (Fig. 15). Release the trigger to stop the saw; the chain continues moving briefly after release.
Final Assembly and Safety Check
- The saw head's lock tabs have engaged and the assembly lock is closed.
- The telescoping lock, auxiliary handle and multi-angle head are firmly secured.
- The chain is correctly oriented, sharp, and tensioned; the end cover is in place.
- The oil tank is filled with proper bar and chain oil, and the battery is charged.
- Before cutting, wear eye, hearing, head and hand protection; keep bystanders at least 50 ft (15 m) away, and use both hands on the tool.
Important: Never operate from a ladder or in a tree. Do not use near overhead power lines. Do not start the saw if the chain is touching an object. Remove the battery before any further adjustment or maintenance. For chain installation or replacement, follow the detailed procedure on manual pages 11–13 (Figs. 3–11); do not start the motor without the bar, chain and end cover installed.
